The frankincense species Boswellia frereana comes from Puntland, a region in the Northeast of Somalia. Its resin is called King of all frankincense by locals, who usually use the term “Maydi”, usually. An old legend translates the origin of the word “maydi” as “meyd-diid”, meaning “against death”. This designation refers to the mummification ritual of the pharaohs in ancient Egypt and their frequent visits to Puntland, the sacred Land of the Punt.
The trees of Boswellia frereana chose steep rocky slopes as their habitat, harvesting them exacts hard work. The honey-coloured pieces of resin are commonly chewed by the locals to promote their health. The resin and the essential oil are rich in α-thujene, which is known for its antibacterial, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities.
The essential oil smells aromatically spicy and very nippy, almost eucalyptic in the beginning. With time, heavily sweet components evolve, calling tropical realms to mind. A balmy summer night at the beach, sand under the feet and the waves of the sea softly recount their stories. While everyday stress seeps away, Boswellia frereana gently gets the inner world in flow, evening it out.
A beguiling, almost aphrodisiac and slightly anaesthetic sweetness remains. It coincides with voluptuous fragrances like vanilla, ylang ylang and jasmine.
Closely accompanied from the resin harvest to the bottle
We buy the frankincense resin directly from small farmers. It originates from wild-growing trees in Somalia. Our farmers collect, clean and sort it. We support this process on site and, after many years of gathering knowledge and experience, are able to assess the quality of the resins ourselves.
For getting the best quality it is important that the trees are harvested only once a year, with breaks every two years, and that they have close seasons during periods of drought.
We only distill the best quality and fresh resin, which results in the outstanding quality of our products. We don’t know of any other company that works comparably.
We accompany the entire production process, from the resin to the bottle.
We extract frankincense hydrosol and essential oil from the high-quality raw material by means of gentle steam distillation.
Varietal purity is very important to us, because like this the different characters of the various types of frankincense can be experienced.
Safety Precautions
