The frankincense species Boswellia carterii comes from Puntland, a region in the Northeast of Somalia. Its resin is usually called “Beeyo” by locals. What most frankincense genera have in common is the at first refreshingly piny, then balsamic sweet fragrance. When we think of the scent of frankincense, usually the species Boswellia carterii comes to mind, since this species is the most popular.
Incidentally, Boswellia sacra and Boswellia carterii were treated as the same species. But, a few years ago, it could be proven that the species are different.
Our Boswellia carterii resin is rich in α-pinene, a substance known for its antibacterial, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities. We obtain it from Puntland, the Northeast of Somalia, where Boswellia frereana is native as well. The locals call it “Beeyo”.
The depth of the fragrance of Beeyo (Boswellia carterii) renders it a versatile base note. Initially, an activating freshness becomes evident, bringing to mind walks through pine forests. Then, a balsamic sweetness, resembling honey and marzipan a little, slowly emerges with a fruity citrus freshness alongside aromatic spicy notes.
Experienced noses might catch a hint of mint and anise in the background.
After the ephemeral constituents have evaporated, more stable elements stay present. Their fragrance has similarities with the mildly fruity and slightly sweet myrrh.
Closely accompanied from the resin harvest to the bottle
We buy the frankincense resin directly from small farmers. It originates from wild-growing trees in Somalia. Our farmers collect, clean and sort it. We support this process on site and, after many years of gathering knowledge and experience, are able to assess the quality of the resins ourselves.
For getting the best quality it is important that the trees are harvested only once a year, with breaks every two years, and that they have close seasons during periods of drought. We only distill the best quality and fresh resin, which results in the outstanding quality of our products. We don’t know of any other company that works comparably. We accompany the entire production process, from the resin to the bottle. We extract frankincense hydrosol and essential oil from the high-quality raw material by means of gentle steam distillation.
Varietal purity is very important to us, because like this the different characters of the various types of frankincense can be experienced.
